RUST DYEING

In this dye workshop we will use old rusty items to dye cotton, linen or wool fabrics or small yarn skeins. The dyed fabrics will be their own "works of art” or they can be used for future weaving projects. This is an easy, non-toxic way of dyeing with found objects that create interesting and appealing designs. We will be layering, wrapping, folding, and experimenting with different ways of applying our fabrics to the rusty items and vice versa.

Participants should bring a plastic container (with lid) that is approximately 6”wide x 12”deep x 4” high and cotton or wool fabrics of different weaves in light colors or they can bring whites cut into sample sizes 12-14’ sq. or approximately one yard to be cut and prewashed (must fit in container with rust objects). Any rusty objects you have that will fit into the container with your fabric (nails, washers, metal scraps, barbecue grill pieces, metal sheets, bottle caps, nuts, bolts, rebar). Other supplies needed are rubber or latex gloves, scissors, cotton twine or rubber bands, and a spray bottle or squirt bottle.
