COLORFUL FIBER-WRAPPED WOOD BLOCKS

At a weaving workshop with Margo Selby, British fiber artist, and designer in Whitstable, Kent, in March of 2025, Margo talked about how she approaches color choices in her work. This led Margo to show us how she wraps wood blocks to see the interplay between the colors, and to explore proportions of what she describes as the 4 things to think about when making color choices. Light, dark, bright, and neutral.
 
While color theory has always been important, Margo’s approach is freeing and brings fresh air into the color discussion. This is like winding color cards, except the yarn wraps around the block in two directions. The result is a playful exercise that keeps evolving as yarn wraps around the block because inevitably, the parts covered create continually changing proportions. The resulting blocks can be helpful in planning a project and the proportional use of individual colors as well as a lovely decorative object.
 
Please bring scissors, a tapestry needle, and thrums to share. The instructor will provide double sided tape to secure the yarn to the block. The 4 ½” x 4 ½” x ¾ “woodblock to wrap will also be available for each participant.
